About
Bright red all over, deep-bodied in front and tapering behind. The name comes from the big golden eyes: a reflective layer called the tapetum behind the pupil gathers what little light reaches the deep. It lives on rocky bottoms 200-800 m down and, despite its Japanese name, is not a sea bream. It is a classic fish for simmering in soy and sugar.

How to catch it
Fished deep, at 200 to 800 metres, from boats on a dropper rig baited with strips of mackerel or squid. Party boats out of Izu and the Boso Peninsula are the home of the fishery.
