Tsurizukan

About this site

What Tsurizukan is

Tsurizukan is a bilingual field guide to fishing in Japan: what you can catch now, where you are, with the gear you have. The guide itself is a smartphone app, and this site publishes the same material. Both are generated from one set of data, so they cannot disagree.

Where the data comes from

The base fish data (Japanese and scientific names, family, English name, distribution, description) is carried over from Sakana Quiz, an earlier app by the same author. The fishing material — seasons, methods, rigs, hazards — is written for this project. Photographs are licensed material from Wikimedia Commons and elsewhere, credited on each species page.

Review status

Seasons, depths, eating quality and hazard notes are being reviewed by an experienced angler. Anything touching law or fishery regulation is checked against primary sources (the Ministry of Health, the Fisheries Agency and prefectural regulations). Please tell us if you find an error.
