Law and regulation

Fishery adjustment regulations, recreational fishing rules, access, minimum sizes and closed seasons are set prefecture by prefecture and by fishery cooperatives, and they change. This service deliberately does not state numeric limits for a given place; instead it explains how to find them. Always check the current rules for where you are going before you go.

This service does not give legal advice. If you need a judgement on the interpretation of the law, consult the relevant authority or a professional.

Safety

Fishing carries real risks: falling in, high waves, falling rock, heat illness, hypothermia and contact with dangerous animals. The decision to go and your own safety are your responsibility. We strongly recommend wearing a life jacket.

Notes on dangerous fish and first aid are general information, not medical instruction. If you are injured, seek medical attention promptly.

Poisonous fish

For pufferfish and other fish with poisonous parts, this service gives no preparation instructions at all. Preparing pufferfish in Japan requires a qualification under the Food Sanitation Act and prefectural ordinances, and an unqualified person may not do it.
