Girella leonina ・ Girellidae (Nibblers)
The star of winter rock fishing, holding further out and in stronger flow than the common nibbler, with the big fish of the Izu Islands and other offshore marks the main draw. It eats best in early summer, though, when it carries fat, so the two seasons do not line up.
Very like its relative the mejina, but told apart by the black rear edge of the gill cover and by the deeply forked tail with long trailing lobes, which earns it the angler's name onaga, or long-tail. Its scales are finer as well. It favours warm rocky coasts from the Boso Peninsula southward, staying farther offshore than mejina, feeds on seaweed and small animals, and is the star of winter rock fishing.
Mostly targeted with float fishing from rocky shores, using krill for bait and groundbait to draw fish in. Trips to the Izu Islands for big ones are hugely popular.
Drift the seam further out than you would for the common nibbler, keeping the rig slack so it travels at the speed of the chum. A swallowed hook means a chafed leader, so lift the rod the moment the float goes under. On a winter rock mark, do not fish alone.

On island and open-coast marks the tide line forms well out, so reach it with a casting cage rig. Shake the cage in the same place every cast and build a single trail of chum rather than several. If the rock is wet, the decision not to go on comes first.

A single row of fine teeth and an abrasive mouth. It is not a danger to your hands, but a swallowed hook means a chafed and broken leader. Unhook it with pliers rather than putting a finger inside.
