About
A slender cyprinid of 15–20 cm that keeps to sandy bottoms. Its long, downward-pointing snout and underslung mouth take in mouthfuls of sand to sift out bottom insects, and the sand alone is blown back out through the gill covers. Dark rings and fine speckles mark the flanks. Startled, it buries itself and leaves only its eyes showing, which earns it local names meaning "sand burrower".
