Months for Oriental Weatherfish are a broad Japan-wide guide and shift with region, temperature and conditions; prefer local reports and rules.
A slender, eel-shaped loach, brown above and pale yellow beneath. It carries ten barbels in five pairs; Japan's other loaches have six or eight, so the count alone identifies it. Besides gills it breathes through its gut, gulping air at the surface and passing it out at the vent. It lives on muddy bottoms in paddies and irrigation ditches, and is the star of yanagawa-nabe.
Caught in paddy ditches and small streams by gasagasa, pushing a hand net through the mud and weeds, or with baited tube traps. A staple of childhood stream play.
