About
A North American sunfish that reaches about 25 cm in Japan. Its name comes from the dark navy flap at the rear edge of the gill cover. The body is deep and strongly flattened from side to side, and young fish carry seven to ten dark bars that fade with age. It is especially fond of the eggs of other fish, and its impact on native species has made it a designated invasive species in Japan.
