Two pairs of barbels, four in all, frame the mouth, which tells it at a glance from the crucian carp, a look-alike with none. It has no teeth in its jaws but crushes snail shells with pharyngeal teeth in its throat, grows to a metre, and lives 15-20 years. A Chinese legend that a carp climbing a waterfall becomes a dragon gave Japanese the phrase toryumon, "gateway to success."
The big fish of ordinary rivers and ponds. The standard approach is a bottom rig with a suikomi dough-bait setup left to soak; floating white bread on the surface, called pan-koi, is popular too.
