Tairaba (tai rubber jig)
A lead or tungsten head trailing a rubber skirt and tail is dropped from a boat; touch bottom, then simply wind up at a constant speed and the red seabream hooks itself. It is boat fishing with unusually simple mechanics, and many party boats rent the tackle, so it suits a first trip offshore. The hard part is not the gear but the patience: whether you can keep winding through the first taps instead of striking decides the day.
Season
Best during the spring spawning run (April-June) and the autumn feed-up (October-December), though many boats run all year.
